How to Merge/Combine Clips in DaVinci Resolve (2 Ways)

Clean up your clips and timeline with ease.

Do you have two clips that you want to merge into one clip?

You might want to do that for several reasons, one of which is to have your timeline clean and organized.

In this step-by-step tutorial, I will show two ways to merge/combine clips in DaVinci Resolve.

Option 1: How to Merge Clips in DaVinci Resolve?

Step 1: Select the clips that you want to merge.

You can zoom-in or zoom-out the timeline to see the clips better.

Hold the Command button on macOS or Control on Windows and click on the clips you want to merge.

Step 2: Right-click on selected clips and choose “New Compound Clip…” in the context menu.

Step 3: A dialog box pops up. Name a new clip and click “Create”.

Now you can see that clips that you selected are now merged into one compound clip.

Compound clips are useful because you can decompose them whenever you want.

How to Decompose a Clip in DaVinci Resolve?

Step 1: Right-click on the compound clip.

Step 2: Select “Decompose in Place” > “Using Clips Only”.

Now, you can see that the clips are arranged as before.

Option 2: How to Join Clips in DaVinci Resolve?

This option is useful when you have one clip that has been cut, and now you want to merge the clip.

A condition needs to be met to use this method – the clips must come from the same source clip.

Step 1: Place the playhead in between two clips that you want to be joined.

Step 2: Go to “Timeline” and select “Join Clips”.

Alternatively, you can use the keyboard shortcutOption and /” on macOS or
Alt and \” on Windows.

Now, if the condition is met, you can see that both clips are joined together.
